Just like the conditions of use, this is page is supposed to be filled with a lot of legalese. But I’m never happy with confusing people, so let’s talk common sense.
First Things First
PodDisc.com will never sell customer data to anyone. Ever. Period. I’m an ordinary schmoe just like you, and I don’t like the idea of my information being sold without my involvement, so I won’t do it to you. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t know how to go about it, and I doubt we’ll ever have so many customers that anyone would want to buy this list. But on the off chance I’m wrong, I’ll make it clear: we won’t sell any PodDisc information to any other parties, under any circumstances.
We Do Talk With Our Content Providers
We’re primarily in the business of selling podcast archives. This means that podcasters are our business partners. When you buy a CD from us, we do share with the podcaster that one of their products was sold. We won’t give them your address or anything, just the fact of the sale and (if they ask) the state or country it was sent to. If you want them to know that you bought their CD, e-mail them yourself and tell them.
Other than that, we won’t give your information away to anyone. If confronted with a court order we will of course comply with it, but only to the extent required by law.
We Don’t Know Your Credit Card Number
PodDisc.com is now hosted with Shopify, one of the Web’s most advanced e-commerce sites. Their payment gateway services are among the best out there, and they’ve been audited and certified to be compliant with all of the major e-commerce standards.
Is your credit card safe? Yes. We’re not storing it on our end, we’re simply passing it to our payment gateway via encrypted channels and letting them tell us if it’s good. Oh, and although we authorize your card right away, we don’t actually take the payment until your order is ready to ship.
If you’re worried about credit card security regardless, you could always use PayPal or Google Checkout, or simply send us a check. We’ll work with you however we can, because we want your sale. And we want you to feel good about it.
Our Sockets Are Secure
Our main page, http://poddisc.com, is unencrypted. There’s no real security around our catalog because, well, we want it to be public. Any pages in which you enter personal information are encrypted by 128-bit SSL, and of course the checkout page is encrypted. This means that no one can steal your information in transit—and it also means that you know for certain that the site you’re on really is ours. On these pages, your browser should show you some sort of padlock icon to say the page is secure. Go ahead and click on it if you like, and examine our SSL certificate. (We paid good money for it, so you might as well admire it.)
IP Information
When you visit our site, the Web server logs your IP address and the page you visited. We use Shopify’s logging and Google Analytics for traffic analysis, but we don’t make any special efforts to tie your IP address to you, and we don’t share this information with anyone else. We just want to know how many people are visiting and what they want. Our mining is not deep.
Have a Cookie
When you make an account, our server gives your Web browser a cookie that can be used to identify you next time you visit. This is essentially just used to say “Hello Bob!” and keep you from having to type your password in again. There’s nothing nefarious going on. If you want to turn cookies off, no big deal. You’ll just be called “Guest” every time and have to put in your password before you log in.
Any questions?
One of the downsides of not going with the exhaustive legal statements is that I can’t be sure this is comprehensive. I do want it to be, so if I’ve forgotten anything of concern to you or you have any questions at all, please drop us a line and I’ll do my best to make things right. Thanks very much—we really do appreciate your business.
